미술사가 꿈이었던 핀 율(Finn Juhl)은 아버지의 반대로 코펜하겐 왕립예술원 건축학과에 입학했다. 학창 시절 그는 덴마크의 저명한 건축가 빌헬름 로리첸(Vilhelm Lauritzen)과 함께 일하며 덴마크 방송 하우스와 코펜하겐 공항 등의 프로젝트를 완성했다. 건축가로서 커리어를 쌓으며 1942년 학술 건축가 협회의 회원이 되는 영예를 얻었고, 시카고의 디자인 연구소의 방문 교수가 되었다. 이런 이유로 핀 율(Finn Juhl)은 가구를 만들 때 조각가적인 사고방식을 가지고 있었다. 가구 디자이너로 이름을 날렸던 당시 그의 야망은 마치 움직이는 듯 살아있는 가구를 디자인하는 것이었다. 의자 중 일부에서는 등받이와 좌석이 거의 보이지 않게 연결되어 있는데, 이 모습은 마치 방을 떠다니는 조각구름의 덩어리처럼 보인다.

그의 생애 마지막 전시로 밝혀진 코펜하겐 쿤스트 산업 박물관(現 덴마크디자인뮤지엄)에서 열린 회고전은 당시 20살이었던 헨리크 쇠렌센과의 인연을 만드는 계기가 된다. 2001년 이반 한센과 한스 헨리크 쇠렌센은 핀 율의 미망인 한네 빌헬름 한센에 의해 핀 율의 조각적이고 상징적인 가구를 제조하고 재출시할 수 있는 모든 독점권을 공식적으로 위임받았다. 핀 율이 남긴 독특한 가구 컬렉션은 품질에 대한 엄격한 요구를 담은 작품으로 기억되고 있다.

BAKER SOFA

The bold and sculptural Baker Sofa designed in 1951 with its two-piece backrest became Finn Juhl’s American debut. The Baker Sofa is masterfully manufactured with a wooden frame in oak or walnut. The upholstery is all hand sewn in textile or leather, with springs in the cushion, providing maximum comfort and durability.

단순한 구조의 재팬 소파는 황동 브래킷을 사용해 베어링 프레임에서 등받이를 분리할 수 있다. 손쉬운 휴대와 이동을 위해 실용성을 더한 아이디어다. 전보다 가늘어진 의자 다리 위에 놓인 단단한 수평 등받이는 마치 일본의 절로 진입하는 큰 문을 연상케 한다. 등받이는 원형의 오목한 부분이 돋보이며 광학적이고 세련된 느낌을 더한다.

WHISKY CHAIR

위스키 체어(Whisky Chair)는 형태, 기능, 디테일에 대한 디자이너의 예술적 감각을 모두 담은 의자다. 미국산 호두나무로 생산되며 직접 손으로 덮개를 씌우는 수작업을 통해 만들어진다. 또한, 수제 황동 트레이와 황동 발로 제작되어 위트를 가미한 고급스러움을 자아낸다.

Upon purchase, customers will receive a unique mouth-blown glass crafted by glassmaker Mikkel Yerst. The first 250 chairs sold are numbered and with each chair the customer will receive a complimentary bottle of a limited peat smoked single malt whisky, aged in an Amarone wine cask, by the award-winning Danish distillery Stauning Whisky.

THE POET SOFA

The Poet Sofa first saw the light of day at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1941 and was originally designed for Finn Juhl’s own home. Taking cues from surrealist art, the small two seater sofa conveys comfort, craftsmanship and respect for the materials used. The sofa is upholstered by hand in Denmark and is available in a variety of textiles and leathers, and the legs come in oak, walnut or black painted.

GRASSHOPPER CHAIR

The Grasshopper Chair was designed by Finn Juhl in 1938 and was one of his first attempts at expressing his artistic freedom in the form of furniture. The Grasshopper has already reached icon-status via numerous illustrations in the design literature. The chair also marks the first in a long line of designs that would go on to manifest Finn Juhl as one of the all-time greatest in furniture design. The Grasshopper is available in oak or walnut and upholstered in textile or leather.

핀 율은 가구 제조업체인 프랜스&손(France&Son)과의 파트너십을 통해 일련의 가구를 탄생시켰다. 1950년대에 지배적이었던 심플한 디자인의 범주에서 유기적 형상의 이상을 고집했다. 이들이 협업한 가장 유명한 컬렉션은 라운지 의자, 발판, 2인승 소파, 3인승 소파로 구성된 1957년의 재팬 시리즈로 알려졌다.

Finn Juhl’s partnership with the furniture manufacturer France & Son gave birth to a series of furniture well-suited for industrial production, while staying true to the ideals of organic shapes within simple designs that reigned in the 1950s.

THE 57 SOFA

57 Sofa was the first of his designs that House of Finn Juhl relaunched. The sculptural silhouette of the sofa is defined by smooth, clean lines and the tall armrests embrace the seat thus creating a nestled area of comfort. This unique design is truly timeless.

Desk is manufactured in different sizes and available with a veneered table top in teak, oak, walnut, Oregon pine or black linoleum, with matching wooden toes on burnished steel legs. THE READING CHAIR

In 1953, Finn Juhl designed this simple, unpretentious, yet thoroughly well-designed and visually pleasing chair. The chair is perfectly fit for private homes, hotels, restaurants and conference facilities alike. The Reading Chair is manufactured in oak with a back piece of oak and walnut or in a fully black painted version.

The Glove Cabinet, designed by Finn Juhl for his wife Hanne Wilhelm Hansen, was presented by Ludwig Pontoppidan at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1961 as part of a collection of bedroom furniture. The Glove Cabinet is made from exclusive Japanese cherry wood with a top handle in wenge and drawers painted in Finn Juhl’s warm and cold range of colours. Legs in burnished steel finished with wheels and fittings in brass.
